Star Magic
A constellation of killing intent, forged from pure mana and shaped like the night sky.
Star Magic is a recognized branch of the magical arts in the world of Mashle, distinguished by its ability to conjure, manipulate, and launch constructs of radiant energy shaped like stars or stellar bodies. Rather than relying on elemental forces like fire or water, Star Magic channels the user's mana into geometric, luminous forms that can be hurled as projectiles, arranged into defensive constellations, or compressed into concentrated bursts of impact. It occupies a place among the dozens of magic types recognized at the Royal Magic Academy, where students are expected to master a single discipline as their primary weapon.
In a story where the protagonist Mash Burnedead possesses no magical ability whatsoever and instead relies on brute physical strength, Star Magic serves as a vivid reminder of the breadth of what magic can accomplish—and of how a purely physical fighter must read, predict, and outpace such elegant offensive patterns to survive.

Lore & Background
In the magic-rich world of Mashle, the spectrum of usable magic is staggeringly wide. Where some practitioners bend flame or call down lightning, Star Magic users draw upon a more geometric and visually precise form of mana manipulation. The core principle is the condensation of raw magical energy into discrete, star-shaped nodes—typically five- or six-pointed forms that glow with a cool, white-gold luminescence. These nodes can be fired individually as piercing projectiles, stacked into rotating arrays that shred anything they touch, or held in a dome configuration to form a barrier that refracts incoming attacks.
What makes Star Magic particularly notable in the academy setting is its versatility within a single discipline. A skilled practitioner can shift between a rapid-fire barrage of small stars, a single massive stellar construct with crushing impact, and a wide-area scattering pattern that fills a room with drifting, razor-edged points. This range means a Star Magic user must juggle timing, spacing, and mana economy all at once, making it a type that rewards precision and composure over raw output.
For non-magical fighters like Mash Burnedead, Star Magic presents a specific tactical challenge: the projectiles are fast, numerous, and often come from multiple angles simultaneously. The absence of a magical counter means the only defense is reading the caster's rhythm, closing distance before the next volley forms, and physically shattering the constructs mid-flight with a hammer swing or a bare-fisted strike. It is a dance of geometry versus raw force, elegance versus muscle.
In Their Own Story
The training grounds at the Royal Magic Academy were quiet at dusk, the sky bruised purple and gold. A student in a crisp academy uniform stood at the center of the sparring circle, fingers splayed, mana pooling in the air above her palms. One by one, tiny stars ignited—five-pointed, sharp-edged, humming with a faint chime. She flicked her wrist. The stars scattered in a wide arc, each one trailing a thin line of light, filling the air with a constellation of slow, lethal geometry.
Across the circle, a lanky boy in a slightly too-large uniform cracked his neck. He didn't raise a shield. He didn't chant a counter-spell. He simply stepped forward, caught the nearest star between his fingers, and crushed it like a soap bubble. The others were still drifting. He swung his hammer in a lazy, underhand arc, and three more shattered against the steel face with a sound like breaking glass. The student blinked. The stars kept coming. He kept walking forward, and the air kept filling with light, and the ground kept cracking under his boots as he closed the distance one stride at a time.
Reader's Guide
STAR MAGIC – MOVE LIST
[Star Bolt] – Single-projectile attack. The caster forms one five-pointed star of condensed mana and hurls it at high velocity. Fast, accurate, moderate damage. Weakness: single-target; easily deflected or shattered by a physical strike if the trajectory is predictable.
[Star Barrage] – Rapid-fire volley of 5-10 small stars launched in a fan or spiral pattern. Covers a wide area and is hard to dodge individually. Weakness: low per-projectile impact; a close-range fighter can wade through the pattern and reach the caster before the next wave forms.
[Stellar Dome] – Defensive/area-denial construct. A rotating sphere of interlocking stars surrounds the caster, refracting and deflecting incoming projectiles. Weakness: the dome is geometric and rigid; a sufficiently powerful single impact (e.g., a hammer blow) can shatter the lattice from the outside.
[Comet Crush] – Heavy-hitting finisher. The caster compresses a large amount of mana into one oversized star and slams it downward or forward for a single devastating impact. Weakness: long wind-up, telegraphed glow, single target. A non-magical fighter with speed can close in during the charge-up and strike before it lands.
[COUNTER – Mash's Approach] – No mana, no counter-spell. Mash reads the caster's rhythm, steps inside the projectile range, and physically intercepts or shatters constructs with his hammer. His strategy: close distance fast, break the geometric pattern, and end the exchange before the next volley forms. Speed and aggression are the only counters.
Did You Know?
- Star Magic's star-shaped constructs are a visual and mechanical contrast to Mash's entirely non-magical fighting style, highlighting the series' core theme of muscle versus mana.
- In the Royal Magic Academy's system, students are expected to specialize in a single magic type, making Star Magic one of many distinct disciplines rather than a universal tool.
- The geometric, multi-pointed shape of Star Magic projectiles means they can be deflected or shattered at specific structural nodes, giving non-magical fighters a tactical opening.
- Star Magic's versatility—shifting between rapid-fire, defensive, and heavy-impact modes within one discipline—makes it a strong all-around choice in the academy's competitive sparring format.
