Time Magic

Bend the clock, and every punch in the world arrives too late.

Time Magic is a rare conceptual magic type in the world of Mashle, where innate magical ability defines social hierarchy and power. Unlike the more common elemental magics—fire, water, lightning, wind—Time Magic operates on the abstract plane of temporal flow, allowing its wielder to accelerate, decelerate, or briefly reverse the passage of time within a localized field. In a setting where magic is everything, a magic that bends the very medium through which all events unfold carries an almost philosophical weight, and its users are treated with a mixture of awe and unease.

Its role in the broader narrative is that of a strategic wildcard: a force that can disrupt the rhythm of battle, negate the speed advantage of lightning users, or create windows of opportunity that no purely physical or elemental counter can easily close. For Mash Burnedead, whose entire identity is built on raw muscle and the deliberate rejection of magic, Time Magic represents a uniquely personal challenge—one that cannot be simply punched through.

Lore & Background

In the magic-society of Mashle, power is sorted by the type of magic one is born with. Elemental magics—fire, water, earth, lightning, wind—form the bulk of the population's abilities and the backbone of military and academic training. Conceptual magics, by contrast, are far rarer and tend to appear in individuals of exceptional standing or lineage. Time Magic sits at the upper end of this conceptual spectrum: it does not create an element or force but instead edits the parameter through which all other forces operate. A user who can slow time to a crawl in a three-meter radius effectively renders lightning speed meaningless, because the lightning still has to travel through the slowed interval.

The social perception of Time Magic users mirrors that of other 'impossible' magics in the world: they are respected, studied, and quietly feared. In an academic or tournament setting, facing a time user is considered a near-unsolvable problem for opponents who rely on speed, reflex, or rapid successive attacks. The magic does not destroy; it reorders. That distinction makes it psychologically unsettling in a culture that values direct, visible power.

For Mash, who has no magic whatsoever and fights with a massive sledgehammer and sheer caloric-fueled strength, Time Magic is a genuine puzzle. He cannot sense magical auras, cannot accelerate his own body, and cannot create a temporal counter-field. His answer, true to his character, is to make his physical output so absolute that even a slowed or shifted timeline cannot absorb it—arriving with enough force that the temporal distortion becomes irrelevant to the outcome.

In Their Own Story

The training ground was quiet except for the hum of a temporal field expanding like a slow ripple in still water. Dust motes hung frozen mid-fall. A bird's wing, caught between beats, trembled at the edge of the radius.

Mash stood outside the ring of distortion, his hammer resting on his shoulder, and watched the world inside slow to a syrupy crawl. His opponent's fist, a second ago a blur of lightning-fast intent, now crept forward like a hand pushing through cold honey. Mash exhaled. He had seen this before in sparring—time stretched, speed stolen, the whole rhythm of a fight pulled out from under you.

He stepped inside the field. The air thickened. His muscles screamed as every fiber fought the drag of decelerated time, his heartbeat stretching into a long, grinding pulse. The hammer felt like it was made of wet sand. But he was Mash. He planted his back foot, twisted his hips through the resistance, and swung.

The hammerhead connected. The temporal field shattered outward like cracked glass, and the frozen dust motes exploded into a brief, silent storm. His opponent was already on the ground, dazed, staring up at the sky where the bird had finally, slowly, finished its wingbeat.

Mash wiped sweat from his brow. "That took a lot of calories," he muttered, and went to find a snack.

Reader's Guide

TIME MAGIC — Mechanics & Counters

Effect: Creates a localized temporal distortion field (typically a few meters in radius). Within the field, the rate of time is altered—slowed, accelerated, or briefly reversed—for everything inside except the caster. The caster remains in normal time, gaining a massive reaction and speed advantage.

Wielder profile: A conceptual-magic user; the ability is innate and cannot be taught. The field requires sustained concentration; extended use drains the user significantly.

Limits: The field is finite in radius and duration. It affects the environment inside it—objects, projectiles, other people—but the caster must remain outside or at the boundary to maintain control. Physical force that originates from outside the field and enters it is partially resisted by the temporal drag, but not fully negated if the force is extreme enough.

Mash's counter (move-list style):

• SENSE THE DRAG: Mash has no magical sense, but he feels the air thicken and his own muscles resist. He uses this tactile cue to identify the field's boundary.

• STEP IN, DON'T WAIT: Rather than trying to speed up (impossible without magic), Mash simply walks into the slowed zone and accepts the drag. His advantage is that his baseline strength is so far above the threshold that even at 1/10th speed, his swing still carries enough force to land.

• HIP-DRIVE OVERLOAD: His signature hammer swing—full rotational torque from the hips and legs—generates force that the temporal drag cannot fully absorb. The hammer breaks through the field's resistance like a battering ram through a curtain.

• FIELD SHATTER: A single full-power strike inside the field overloads the temporal distortion, cracking it. Once broken, the field collapses and the opponent loses their speed advantage instantly.

• CALORIC RESET: The physical exertion of fighting inside a slowed field burns enormous energy. Mash's solution is simple: eat. He refuels between exchanges, treating the fight as a long, hungry slog rather than a burst.
