Space Magic

Fold the world in half, or let Mash hit it flat with a hammer.

Space Magic is a specialized discipline within the Mashle world's vast magical taxonomy, focused on warping, compressing, and opening rifts in the fabric of space itself. Rather than hurling elemental energy, a Space Mage bends the geometry around them—folding distance into a punch, tearing a pocket of void for teleportation, or crushing an opponent inside a compressed spatial bubble. It is treated as a high-tier, precision-heavy art at the Magic Academy, prized for its versatility in both offense and evasion.

For Mash Burnedead, who possesses zero magical aptitude, Space Magic is just another problem to hit with a hammer. Where a spatial compression might crush a conventional mage, Mash simply walks through the warped zone, shrugs off the distortion, and brings the black hammer down with a resounding *MASH*. The contrast between elegant spatial geometry and blunt, unbreakable muscle is one of the series' most beloved comedic beats.

Lore & Background

In the Mashle world, magic is the bedrock of society—governance, warfare, and daily life all orbit it. Space Magic occupies a niche that feels almost architectural: the practitioner does not create energy so much as edit the stage on which energy moves. A skilled Spatial Mage can step sideways into a rift and reappear behind an enemy, or pinch the air between two points until the gap vanishes entirely, dragging whatever sits inside into a singularity of pressure. Because the effect is geometric rather than elemental, it resists the usual elemental counters (water douses fire, earth grounds lightning) and instead demands a response that ignores geometry altogether.

That is precisely where Mash's existence becomes a narrative weapon. His body, forged by a lifetime of physical labor and an unexplainable surplus of muscle, simply does not register spatial distortion the way a mage's does. A compressed pocket of space that would fold a normal person into a cube is, to Mash, a slightly tight room. He steps out, cracks his knuckles, and the spatial construct shatters under the kinetic shockwave of his hammer swing. In the Academy's competitive culture, this makes him an anomaly that Space Mages struggle to categorize: he is neither a mage to be out-manaed nor a physical opponent to be out-muscled, because his physics operate on a different axis entirely.

Fans often note that Space Magic's elegance is undermined by the series' central joke: no matter how beautifully you fold space, a sufficiently large hammer with a sufficiently loud *MASH* will just… hit the fold flat.

In Their Own Story

The corridor of the Academy's east wing hummed with residual mana. Elric, a third-year Spatial specialist, pinched his fingers together and the air split like wet paper. A violet seam hung between the two pillars, three meters wide, its edges bleeding faint starlight. He stepped through, reappeared behind his opponent, and smiled.

The opponent blinked. Then he walked *through* the seam as though it were a curtain, his shoulder brushing the violet light with a soft *fwip*. The spatial fold shuddered. Elric's smile faltered.

"…Huh?"

A black hammer, the size of a small car, swung in a lazy arc. The shockwave hit the seam like a fist hitting a soap bubble. The rift imploded with a sound like a thunderclap swallowed in a library, and the two pillars cracked down the middle.

Elric stared at the dust settling on his uniform. The hammer owner was already walking away, humming.

"…I need to update my counter-protocol," Elric muttered, and for the first time in three years, he was not sure what that protocol would look like.

Reader's Guide

SPACE MAGIC — Move List

[Portal Step] — Wielder: various Spatial Mages (Academy & beyond). Action: tear a brief rift in local space and step through it, reappearing at a chosen point within range. Effect: near-instant repositioning; can bypass walls, barriers, and physical guards. Limit: the rift is visible, has a short lifespan, and can be shattered by enough kinetic force.

[Spatial Compression] — Wielder: advanced Spatial Mages. Action: pinch the space between two points until the distance collapses, dragging everything inside into a high-pressure singularity. Effect: crushing damage, can trap and immobilize. Limit: requires precise geometric control; a blunt, undifferentiated force (like a hammer swing) disrupts the compression field and pops it.

[Rift Slash] — Wielder: combat-oriented Spatial Mages. Action: carve a linear tear in space and swing it like a blade. Effect: cuts through physical and magical objects without direct contact. Limit: the tear is fragile; heavy kinetic impact collapses it before it can complete its arc.

MASH COUNTERS (Hammer Techniques)

[Flat Strike] — Mash swings the black hammer in a horizontal arc. The raw kinetic shockwave ignores spatial geometry and shatters compression fields, portals, and rifts on contact. No mana, no incantation—just mass × acceleration.

[Shoulder-Through] — Mash walks directly through an active spatial distortion. His body does not register the fold; the construct destabilizes and collapses around him. Effectively nullifies Portal Step and Compression by simply not participating in the geometry.

[MASH] — The signature overhead slam. The impact sound is so loud it is its own status effect. Against Space Magic, it acts as a universal 'reset': any active spatial construct within the shockwave radius is erased. No counter, no phase, just a very loud *MASH* and a lot of dust.
