Gravity Magic
The ground remembers who owns it, and Gravity Magic is the signature on that deed.
Gravity Magic is a force-based discipline within the Mashle world's magic system, allowing its wielder to manipulate gravitational pull over a targeted area or object. Rather than reshaping matter or channeling elemental energy, it bends the invisible 'weight' that governs how things fall, rest, and collide, giving the caster a kind of quiet, inescapable dominion over space itself.
In a setting where nearly every citizen channels some form of magic from childhood, Gravity Magic occupies a niche that is less flashy than a lightning bolt or a wall of flame but arguably more insidious: it does not announce itself with color or sound, only with the sudden, crushing sense that the ground has become a ceiling.

Lore & Background
In the Mashle world, magic is as common as breathing, and the taxonomy of types is something every child learns before they learn to read. Elemental magics—lightning, water, fire, earth, wind, ice—dominate the public imagination because they are loud, visible, and easy to demonstrate in a classroom. Gravity Magic, by contrast, is the type that makes seasoned mages uneasy. A lightning strike can be dodged; a wall of water can be evaporated. But a subtle increase in gravitational pull on your feet is something you feel in your bones before your eyes register anything, and by the time you realize the floor has become a ceiling, the fight is already over.
The discipline is often described by its practitioners as 'patient.' There is no grand incantation, no swirling aura. A Gravity mage simply adjusts the invisible field around a target, and the world bends. In the competitive and hierarchical culture of the Magic Academy, this makes Gravity Magic both respected and quietly distrusted: it is the kind of power that wins without spectacle, and in a world that worships spectacle, that is its own quiet rebellion.
Because Gravity Magic interacts with the physical world rather than generating new energy, it pairs naturally with other disciplines. A mage who combines a gravity well with a wind gale, for example, can create a localized vortex that pins opponents in place. This synergistic flexibility is one reason the type appears across multiple social strata rather than being locked to a single noble house.
In Their Own Story
The corridor of the Easton dormitory was silent except for the soft tick of a wall clock. Lysander stood three paces from the door, his fingers relaxed at his sides, his expression almost bored. Behind him, the hallway stretched empty and fluorescent-lit.
He did not raise his hand. He did not chant. He simply *shifted* something, a half-degree of intention, and the air in front of the door thickened. The dust motes that had been drifting lazily in the lamplight suddenly fell *upward*, spiraling toward the ceiling in a slow, silent helix. The clock's pendulum swung a fraction of a degree off its arc, as if the room had tilted in a direction no one could see.
Then the door opened. A first-year stepped out, mid-sentence, and stopped. His shoes lost their grip. He rose—gently, inevitably—off the floor, his arms pinwheeling, his voice a thin, surprised 'oh.'
Lysander tilted his head, almost apologetic. 'Sorry. I was in a hurry.'
He walked past, and the boy settled back down with a soft thud, staring at the ceiling as if it had personally offended him.
Reader's Guide
GRAVITY MAGIC — Force/Manipulation Type Wielder: Various; no single canonical house owns the type.
Core Mechanic: The caster projects a localized gravitational field, increasing or inverting pull on a chosen target or volume. Think of it as turning the 'down' dial up or flipping it to 'up' in a small radius. No elemental energy is generated; the mage is redirecting an existing force.
Typical applications: • Pinning: A subtle upward pull on an opponent's feet removes their traction, disrupting stances and casting motions. • Zone control: A wider field makes a section of ground feel 'heavier,' slowing movement and making jumps shorter. • Inversion: A full reversal flips the local 'down,' sending loose objects (and unanchored people) skyward.
Limits & Weaknesses: • Range and radius scale with the caster's output; sustained wide-area fields drain stamina quickly. • It affects mass, so a sufficiently strong or anchored opponent (or one bracing against a fixed structure) can resist. • It does not generate force on its own—without a target to pull, the field is inert.
MASH COUNTER-PLAY (Physical / Hammer): Mash Burnedead cannot cast magic, so Gravity Magic has no internal 'switch' to flip against him. His counter is blunt and physical: • Hammer Swing: A full overhead or horizontal swing generates enough kinetic force to shatter the localized field's anchor point, breaking the pull before it locks in. • Charge & Break: Mash plants his feet and drives forward with raw momentum; the sheer mass and speed of his body overwhelms the gravitational delta, making the 'heavier' ground feel no different to him. • Inversion Negation: If the field flips 'down' to 'up,' Mash simply *walks* off the ceiling, his grip and core strength unaffected by the shift. He treats an inverted floor like a normal one. • The core principle: Gravity Magic bends the rules of the environment. Mash bends the environment back with his hammer.
Did You Know?
- In the Mashle world, magic is treated as a birthright; a child who cannot channel any type is considered an outlier, which is precisely Mash Burnedead's situation.
- Gravity Magic's lack of visible spectacle makes it a favorite in the story's more tactical, behind-the-scenes confrontations rather than in large arena brawls.
- Mash's inability to use magic is not a weakness in the narrative; his superhuman physical strength and hammer work are presented as a direct, equal counter to even the most sophisticated magical techniques.
- The Magic Academy setting in Mashle blends a school-of-magic structure with a sports-competition feel, so magic types are often showcased in structured duels and team matches.
