In the world of Mashle, magic is woven into every facet of daily life—transportation, construction, communication, and, of course, warfare. Most people think of magic in elemental terms: fire to burn, water to flood, earth to crush. Mirror Magic breaks that expectation. A practitioner does not summon a natural force so much as they impose an artificial optical layer onto reality. The conjured mirror-sheets behave like perfect, weightless glass suspended in the air, and the user can angle, multiply, and shatter them at will.

What makes Mirror Magic philosophically interesting in the Mashle setting is its relationship to the Magic Circuit. Like all magic, it draws on the user's internal mana reserves, but the output is almost entirely geometric. The harder a user tries to make a mirror infinitely large or perfectly still, the more mana drains. This creates a natural tension: a Mirror Magic fighter must constantly decide whether to hold a wide defensive array or concentrate their circuit into a single, razor-thin sheet that can slice or redirect a concentrated beam. Overextending the mirror network is the classic way a practitioner gets overwhelmed.

Within the academy and beyond, Mirror Magic is respected but not feared in the way a raw Lightning or Gravity user might be. Its ceiling is lower in terms of sheer destructive output, yet its floor—its ability to render an opponent's attack useless by reflecting it back or by feeding them a false image—is extraordinarily high. In a world where most combatants rely on overwhelming force, a skilled Mirror Magic user can make a powerhouse swing at an illusion and leave their guard wide open.

In Their Own Story

The corridor outside the academy's east training hall was silent except for the faint hum of residual mana settling into the tiles. She stood at the far end, arms loose at her sides, and flicked her wrist. A thin sheet of mirror materialized in the air between them—no larger than a playing card, perfectly still, catching the overhead light in a cold silver line.

"You're going to swing first," she said. Not a question.

He did. The hammer came down in a wide arc, the air splitting with a crack that made the windows rattle. The mirror sheet tilted. Not by much. Just enough. The shockwave kissed its surface and scattered sideways, punching a clean hole in the far wall where no one was standing. He blinked, recovering his balance, and saw—through the same little sheet—his own reflection staring back at him from an angle that shouldn't have existed. A second mirror. A third. They bloomed around him in a slow spiral, each one showing a slightly different version of the room, a slightly different version of him.

She was already walking away, hands in her pockets, the mirrors dissolving into glittering dust behind her. "Again?" she called back, not turning around.

MIRROR MAGIC — MOVE LIST

Conjure Sheet (Basic): The user projects a flat, reflective plane into the air at a chosen distance. Size and thickness are mana-scaled. A small sheet (palm-sized) costs little; a full-room barrier drains reserves quickly. The sheet is intangible to the user but solid to external force.

Angle Redirect (Counter): By tilting a sheet mid-swing, the user bounces a projectile, beam, or shockwave back along a new vector. Precision matters—a two-degree error sends the redirect wide. Cannot reflect area-of-effect magic that has no single vector.

False Reflection (Misdirection): The user projects a secondary image through the mirror surface, making it appear as though they are standing in a different position. Lasts only as long as the sheet is maintained. Collapses instantly if the sheet is shattered.

Multi-Sheet Array (Advanced): Three or more sheets linked in a geometric pattern, creating overlapping reflections. Visually overwhelming; used to trap an opponent in contradictory images. Mana cost multiplies per sheet. Maximum practical limit is around five before the user's circuit overloads.

Shatter Pulse (Offensive): The user slams their mana into a single sheet, causing it to fragment into a fan of razor-edged shards that fly outward. Short-range burst. The shards are glass-like and shatter on impact; no sustained cut.

LIMITS & COUNTERS: - Brute-force disruption: A sufficiently powerful non-directional blast (think Mash's hammer) cracks and shatters sheets before the user can re-angle them. - Non-visual attacks: Sound-based, gravity-based, or pure-kinetic strikes that don't rely on a visible vector bypass the redirect mechanic entirely. - Mana drain: Holding multiple sheets while also tracking an opponent's movement taxes the circuit. Prolonged engagements favor the attacker. - No true invisibility: The mirrors reflect light; they do not absorb it. A careful observer can spot the faint distortion at the sheet's edges.
