Communication Magic

In a world of hammers and hellfire, sometimes the most vital spell is simply saying 'behind you.'

Communication Magic is a recognized category of magic in the world of Mashle, where nearly every citizen wields some form of supernatural ability. Rather than dealing direct damage or reshaping the environment, Communication Magic focuses on the transmission of information—allowing its user to project their voice, relay messages across distance, or establish a sensory link with another person. In a society structured around magical academies, military orders, and political factions, the ability to send and receive messages without physical proximity makes this type both a practical tool and a strategic asset.

Because Mashle's world treats magic as the backbone of civilization, even 'support' disciplines like Communication Magic are trained formally and can be refined to impressive degrees. While it rarely takes center stage in the raw combat spectacles the series is known for, it underpins the logistics of how characters coordinate, warn allies, and maintain contact across the sprawling landscapes of the story.

Lore & Background

In the magical society of Mashle, the ability to send a word across a mile is no less a feat than blasting a boulder into orbit. Communication Magic operates on the principle of forging a temporary sympathetic thread between two mages' aether, allowing sound, simple images, or even the sensation of touch to travel along that invisible line. The strength and clarity of the link scale with the user's magical output and their focus; a strained or interrupted link can leave the recipient with a splitting headache or a burst of static noise.

Academy students who specialize in support roles often pair Communication Magic with Sensory Magic to build layered warning networks, while field operatives in the military use it to relay battlefield positions in real time. Because the link is aetheric rather than physical, it can be severed by strong anti-magic fields or by overwhelming the sender's concentration with pain or shock—making it vulnerable in the chaotic, high-intensity duels that define the series' climactic arcs.

For Mash Burnedead, who possesses zero magical aptitude, Communication Magic is a reminder of how much of the world's infrastructure he simply cannot participate in. He cannot send a message, cannot join a relay chain, cannot even eavesdrop on a magical frequency. His 'communication' is limited to shouting, gesturing, or—most reliably—smashing the person who needs to be told something into a state of immediate, involuntary compliance.

In Their Own Story

The rain had turned the academy's eastern corridor into a shallow river of grey water. Elma pressed her fingertips together, a faint silver thread humming between them like a plucked harp string, and whispered the coordinates into the link. Three miles away, across a ridge of black pines, her partner felt the numbers bloom behind her eyes—cold, precise, already fading.

She opened her mouth to relay them, but the thread snapped. Not a gentle unraveling. A hard, brutal severance, as if something had bitten through the aether with teeth. The silence that followed was worse than the rain.

She looked up. At the top of the ridge, a figure stood motionless in the downpour, hammer resting on one shoulder, watching the academy with the flat, patient curiosity of a boy who had never once needed to whisper a warning. He couldn't send the message. He didn't need to. He was already walking toward them, and the ground was starting to crack under his boots.

Reader's Guide

COMMUNICATION MAGIC — Support / Information Type

Who wields it: Any mage who trains in the discipline; commonly seen in academy support units, military liaison roles, and paired with Sensory or Barrier specialists. No single character in the series is exclusively defined by it, so it functions more as a tool in a mage's kit than a signature identity.

Mechanics: The user projects a thin aetheric filament toward a target recipient. Once the recipient's aether 'catches' the thread, voice, simple visual snapshots, or haptic pulses can travel both ways. Range and clarity depend on the sender's output and concentration. Multi-party links are possible but degrade in fidelity with each added node.

Limits & weaknesses: The link is aetheric, so it can be cut by anti-magic suppression, by overloading the sender's focus (pain, shock, heavy physical exertion), or by a sufficiently powerful opposing magic that disrupts local aether. A severed link often leaves the recipient with disorientation or a sharp headache. Because it requires two willing (or at least aetherically receptive) endpoints, it cannot be used against someone who has no magic at all—making it, ironically, one of the few spells Mash Burnedead is completely immune to by virtue of his total magical nullity. He doesn't counter it; he simply isn't a node in the network.
